Unified Extensible Firmware Interface Forum’s Inclusion of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Standard Helps Synchronize Interface Definitions
Beaverton, Ore. – The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Forum, a non-profit industry standards body that creates specifications to enable the evolution of platform technologies, today announced it is assuming stewardship of the Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) specification. The ACPI specification provides an open standard for flexible device configuration and power management by the operating system. This strategy will allow more spec contributors to participate in future developments, as well as help unite ACPI with existing UEFI platform standards. It will also aid in synchronizing interface definitions, lessening market fragmentation, and addressing current driver problems experienced by the open-source community.
“Transferring the ACPI specs to the UEFI Forum is favorable to the Linux community,” said Grant Likely, technical architect at Linaro and device tree subsystem maintainer. “In particular, we believe the participation of open-source developers is critical to bringing ACPI onto new classes of platforms and devices.”
The ACPI-SIG will publish v5.0a as its final version. Following this release, the UEFI Forum will pilot future ACPI expansions of platform-independent interfaces for hardware discovery, configuration, and power management.
